STEP, IGES, or DXF: Choosing the Right CAD Format for Quoting
When you request a manufacturing quote, the file format you send affects how quickly and accurately your parts can be quoted and programmed. Mikron accepts STEP, IGES, and DXF files. Here is when each makes sense.
STEP (.stp, .step) is the most widely used neutral 3D format and the best default for machined parts and formed sheet-metal components. It preserves solid geometry accurately across CAD systems, which means the manufacturer can measure features directly and generate toolpaths with confidence.
IGES (.igs, .iges) is an older neutral format that remains common in some industries. It transfers surfaces and wireframes reliably, though complex solids occasionally require repair after translation. If your CAD system exports clean STEP files, prefer STEP; if IGES is what you have, we can work with it.
DXF (.dxf) is a 2D format best suited to flat patterns for laser cutting and CNC punching. For sheet-metal parts, a DXF of the flat pattern plus a PDF drawing showing bend lines and dimensions is a very workable package.
Whatever format you choose, include a PDF drawing when tolerances, finishes, or inspection requirements matter. The 3D model defines the geometry; the drawing defines what must be controlled and verified.
One important note: never send export-controlled or ITAR-controlled technical data through a website form or ordinary email. Contact Mikron to arrange an approved secure transfer method.
