ITAR for Hardware Buyers: What to Look For in a Supplier

Reviewed by Mikron Manufacturing Engineering Team 8/15/2026
A practical overview of what ITAR registration means for manufacturing buyers and how to handle controlled technical data with suppliers.

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) control the export of defense-related articles and technical data. If your hardware falls under ITAR, your manufacturing suppliers must be part of your compliance picture.

ITAR registration means a manufacturer has registered with the U.S. State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. Registration is a baseline requirement for manufacturers handling ITAR-controlled hardware and data. Mikron Manufacturing is ITAR registered.

For buyers, the most common day-to-day issue is data handling. ITAR-controlled drawings and models must not be transmitted through uncontrolled channels — including ordinary website upload forms and consumer file-sharing services.

This is why Mikron's request-for-quote form does not accept file uploads for controlled data: contact us directly and we will arrange an approved secure transfer method for your technical data.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Your organization's export-compliance officer or counsel should guide specific decisions.
